The Greenhouse

The caring staff of Jefferson House, a Department of Hartford Hospital, has been providing excellent long-term care and rehabilitation services to seniors in the greater Hartford area for over 120 years.

A special act of the Connecticut Legislature chartered The Old People's Home at 36 Jefferson Street, Hartford, in 1873. In 1884 our first building was constructed . It offered the elderly an alternative to the County Poorhouse. Residents paid a weekly fee of $40.00. The fee was soon changed to a one-time payment of $400, payable upon admission, which guaranteed care for life!

In 1947, a resident of The Old People's Home objected to having her age emphasized by the name of the residence. We changed the name to Jefferson House. Even then, staff and administration cared for the whole patient, not just his or her medical needs.

Today, Jefferson House is a modern, airy home away from home located in Newington, a suburb of Hartford, Connecticut. While our name and locations have changed over 120 years, Jefferson House staff continues its tradition of caring for the whole individual and continues evolving to take advantage of new knowledge, meeting the needs of a changing elderly population and their families. Our Restorative Nursing Program is on the cutting edge of gerontological nursing and rehabilitative care.

Jefferson House is licensed by the State of Connecticut and accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
